Sewage Disposal

One of the problems facing the United Arab Emirates is the sustainability of its natural resources, especially water. For them, Al Ain University has the challenge of changing the traditional form of demand for water that was satisfied through the exploitation of groundwater. However, rapid economic development, coupled with population growth, has significantly increased the demand for water. Groundwater extraction in Abu Dhabi is currently more than 25 times the average recharge rate and groundwater resources are expected to be depleted in the next 50 years. To reduce its dependence on groundwater and desalinated water, the Emirate plans to increase the use of TWW for agriculture. The main challenge is how to do it without endangering the health of citizens or the environment. In response to this challenge, the project strengthened the capabilities of the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) in the safe reuse of TWW for agriculture through better monitoring of treated wastewater.

Local municipalities in the UAE are responsible for managing, disposing and treatment of wastewater. In Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company (ADSSC) is in charge of collecting and treating waste-water discharged from all residential and commercial customers.

Sewer disposal on the AAU campus is managed by Water and Sewer hauling trucks. AAU effectively cooperates with them on sewage waste.

AAU cooperates effectively with Aqualia in wastewater treatment.
